The Hague, the Netherlands, August 25, 2011 – Brazil’s Talita Antunes and Maria Antonelli are happy to be back in The Hague for the third year in a row. They have nothing but good memories about the Dutch city by the sea, despite lots of rain and wind in 2009 and 2010. On the first day of the main draw of the 2011 FIVB Swatch World Tour HP Beach Open they started with two steady wins over the Finnish Nystrom-sisters (21-16 21-18) and USA’s Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Hanson (21-18 21-18).

“We are very happy to be back in The Hague”, Talita said. “It is a place where we always have fun and great results. And now for the first time also good weather.” Fourth seeded Talita/Antonelli won silver in 2009 and gold last year. “We have always been in the finals here, so we hope we can do the same this year. But there is a strong women’s field this year with Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor, so it is going to be a challenge.”

World champions and World Tour leaders Juliana Felisberta da Silva and Larissa Franca eased their way trough the first two rounds of the main draw, directing Norway’s Kathrine Maaseide/Ingrid Torlen (21-15 21-11) and Greece’s Vasiliki Arvaniti/Maria Tsiartsiani (21-13 21-17) to the loser’s bracket. Juliana: “Overall I am totally fine with the way we played on our first day, but we need a bit of fine-tuning on the details.”

With two tournaments left, the Brazilian girls are defending a small lead in the race for the overall World Tour title ahead of USA’s May-Treanor/Walsh, but Juliana said she does not want to think about that. “We missed three finals the past weeks, so I am just focusing on making it to the final here in The Hague.” Juliana and Larissa won the first edition of the event in the Dutch coastal town, but finished only fifth last year.

Last season’s silver medalists Chen Xue and Xi Zhang also remained unbeaten without losing a set. After a 21-17 21-18 win over Georgia’s Saka/Rtvelo the Chinese only needed 28 minutes to defeat Belgium’s Katrien Gielen/Liesbeth Mouha (21-17 21-17).

Dutch top team Sanne Keizer and Marleen van Iersel, who won two World Tour events early this season, closed the day with an evening match on a packed center court. The support of the crowd was not enough to get them to the third round. They lost in three sets (21-19 22-24 13-15) to Swiss team Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr.

The main draw continues on Friday, with Larissa/Juliana meeting USA’s eight-seeded Jennifer Kessy/April Ross at 10.00 am on center court in an interesting third round match. The semifinals for both genders are scheduled for Saturday. The finals are played on Sunday. The HP Beach Open is the 15th of 16 FIVB events for the women this season, and the final double gender event on the 2011 calendar. Early November Thailand stages the final women’s tournament of the season in Phuket.
