The Hague, the Netherlands, August 23, 2011 – Four teams from host country the Netherlands earned a spot in the women’s qualification tournament of the FIVB Swatch World Tour HP Beach in The Hague. On the first day of the third edition of the Dutch World Tour event seven host-country teams competed for four spots. Jantine van der Vlist and Roos van der Hoeven, playing their last tournament together, got a bye and advanced without playing on Tuesday.

Talented Rimke Braakman (20) and Michelle Stiekema (21) earned their place in the qualifications by beating Jolien Sinnema/Margo Wiltens in two sets 21-9, 21-15 in just 28 minutes. They have shown to be in excellent shape these last few weeks, winning the European Championships under-23 early this month and surprisingly taking the Dutch national title on Sunday. “We are definitely in great shape”, Braakman said. “Our goal for now is a spot in the main draw.” Asked about the home-town advantage, she answered: “For me mainly, the advantage is that we live real close by the venue. We sleep at home, just get up and cycle to the beach.”

Dutch veteran Rebekka Kadijk and Merel Mooren advanced by winning 2-0 (21-15, 21-13) over Annemieke Driessen/Wendy Boerhave. The fourth team entering the qualifications is Ilke Meertens/Mered de Vries. They beat Laura Bloem/Esther Hullegie in straight sets 21-11, 21-14.

The women’s tournament of the double gender $380,000 HP Beach Open runs parallel to the men’s. For both qualifications start on Wednesday. The main draw starts on Thursday, with the semifinals being played on Saturday and the finals scheduled for Sunday. The 2010 women’s edition in the Dutch coastal town was won by Brazil’s Maria Antonelli and Talita Antunes, who beat China’s Chen Xue/Xi Zhang in the final.
