Harley and Thiago win Brazil’s country quota

Harley Marques (spiking) and Thiago Barbosa won Brazil's country quota

The Hague, the Netherlands, August 23, 2011 – Harley Marques and Thiago Barbosa on Tuesday earned a spot in the qualification tournament of the FIVB Swatch World Tour HP Beach Open by winning the country quota for the Brazilian teams. They beat Moises Santos/Alvaro Filho and Bruno Oscar Schmidt/Joao Maciel on their way. Host country the Netherlands advanced four teams to the qualifications.

Harley won bronze two years ago in The Hague with young Alison Cerutti. Harley has always been very popular with the Dutch crowd for his expressive way of playing and was again the best watched match on Tuesday. The 38-year-old teamed up with Thiago only this season. On the first day of the HP Beach Open they started with a 21-16, 21-12 win over Santos/Alvaro in just 36 minutes. Against Santos/Alvaro they were also leading during the whole game, never in any trouble and really putting service pressure on. Thiago ended the match with a kill block at 21-15, 21-13.

“We had a good start,” Harley said. “And we hope this will eventually lead to the final. Why not? I would like this tournament to be our best this year.” The Brazilian duo had to get used to each other at the beginning of the season, not having played as a team before. They are condemned to start in the country quota almost every tournament. The fifth place in July in Moscow was their best result this year. “But we are getting better step by step. Next year will be better definitely, that will be our season.”

Also advancing to the qualifications were Dutch pair Bart Bolsterlee and Timko Lokerse. Last year they missed the country quota as they arrived too late to register due to a traffic jam. This year they made sure at least one of them was on time. Bolsterlee and Lokerse beat Tim Oude Elferink and Jeroen van Zwieten in straight sets: 21-12, 21-17. “We served well, that is our main strength,” Bolsterlee said. The Dutch pair are aiming for a place in the main draw. “In 2009 we finished in qualifications, so our goal is at least the main draw. But it is going to be difficult in this strong field.”

Marco Daalmeijer/Kees Spil earned a spot in the qualification tournament by defeating Guido Mopman/Frank van den Outenaar in three sets (16-21, 21-17, 15-13). Stan van Laanen/Sven Vismans and Christiaan Varenhorst/Jon Stiekema advanced without playing due to withdrawals.

The Hague is hosting its third consecutive FIVB Swatch World Tour event. The semifinals of the double gender tournament will be played on Saturday, the finals are scheduled for Sunday. USA's Casey Jennings, who won gold last year with Kevin Wong, will defend his title with Casey Patterson.
