PRESS RELEASE
Kerri Walsh aiming to grab fourth win of the season on debut in Aland

Kerri Walsh is making her debut in Aland, but is aiming to win her fourth FIVB Swatch World Tour event of the year with Misty May-Treanor

Aland, Finland, August 16, 2011 – Kerri Walsh and Misty May Treanor already have three FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour wins under their belts in 2011 and will be aiming to add another at the Paf Open in Aland.

Remarkably the United States duo have never before played in Aland, but hope to add to victories in Beijing, Moscow and most recently, Klagenfurt.

“It is my first time at this event and it is great to be here,” Walsh said. “We are having a great season and it has been great to come back and I hope it continues here.

“We are one of the favourites and it has been so far so good. I took two years off from this sport and everyone got better. Brazil for sure is our biggest competitor.”

The win in Klagenfurt continued a remarkable return to form for the double Olympic gold medallists and three-times FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Championship winners. The pair took two years off after winning gold at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, with Walsh giving birth to two boys before she returned.

“I think I will get better,” Walsh said. “I’m not better yet, but I think I will get better. I feel stronger and I just need my brain to catch up with my body.”

Along with the three World Tour wins, Walsh and May-Treanor took silver at the 2011 World Championships in Rome.

Walsh recently missed the recent London 2012 beach volleyball test event to rest after their win in Klagenfurt, but is determined to defend her and May-Treanor’s Olympic title for a second time at the venue in Horse Guard’s Parade.

“All the accounts I’ve read online have been very good,” Walsh said. “The facilities have been good and it sounds like a great venue. But we are still trying to qualify, so it is a bit premature to be talking about playing there.”
