Sweden talk up chances ahead of Paf Open

Former World Tour player Simon Dahl also added that he expects a tight battle in the women's tournament

Aland, Finland, August 15, 2011 – Swedish beach volleyball federation captain Ulric Svensson says he hopes home duo Hannes Brinkborg and Stefan Gunnarsson can add to their fifth place finish in Quebec in July as they prepare to take part in the Paf Open from August 15 to 21 in Aland on the latest stage of the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour.

Brinkborg/Gunnarsson’s result in Canada matched their best ever finish and Svensson added that it is vital the tandem keep improving as they search for a place at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

“I believe that Hannes and Stefan can perform as well on the home court as in Quebec where they proved that they can keep a high level in several games one after another,” he said on Friday. “The dream for the Olympic Games is very much alive and a top placing is important and can make them eligible for the Olympics.”

Meanwhile, Simon Dahl, who competed on the World Tour for eight season and is directing the tournament, has outlined who he thinks will do well at the competition as it is held for a fourth time on the island.

“We are looking forward to see some fantastic games,” he said. “Misty [May-Treanor] and Kerri [Walsh] are beach volleyball’s most successful team in all categories and it is cool that they are coming to the Paf Open. Personally I think that [Brazil’s] Larissa and Juliana or the Chinese number four ranked players Xue Chen and Zhang Xi will win the tournament this year.”

However he added that it will be between just two teams for the men’s crown.

“Phil [Dalhausser, USA] and Alison [of Brazil] are two monsters in net duels while Todd [Rogers] and Emanuel are two of the world’s best defenders,” he speculated. “I hope to see the battle of these two teams in the finals.”

The Paf Open will be jointly hosted by both Finland and Sweden for the third time as the world’s top players descend on the Baltic Sea island. Additionally the local postal service has released a special stamp in celebration of the event. To see the stamp visit www.posten.ax.
