Lausanne, Switzerland, July 17, 2011 - The ninth women’s and eighth men’s events on the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour and fourth of six double gender Grand Slams were played this past week at the $600,000 Moscow Grand Slam at Poklonnaya Gora, Moscow, Russia.
In the women’s competition, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh of the United States won their second event of 2011 and their 37th career FIVB Swatch World Tour gold medal together. It was Misty’s 40th victory, tying her for third all-time, and Kerri’s 41st, tying her for the best all-time. On the men’s side, Brazil’s Alison Cerutti/Emanuel Rego also won their season-leading fifth gold in 2011 and fifth together. It was Emanuel’s career best 74th FIVB Swatch World Tour victory and the 11th for Alison.
This week the world tour leaves Europe, after four consecutive events, for North America in a double-gender Open in Québec, Canada from July 19-24, the $380,000 FIVB Swatch Quebec Open Jeep 2011, presented by Videotron. The Tour returns to Europe the following week for the final two double-gender Grand Slams in Stare Jablonki, Poland from July 25-31 and Klagenfurt, Austria from August 1-7. After taking a week off for the 24-team women’s only Olympic Test event held in London’s Horse Guard’s Parade, Europe hosts the final two double-gender open events in Aland, Finland from August 15-21 and The Hague, Netherlands from August 23-28.
2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour Highlights • The 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour circuit will visit 18 sites in 16 countries over an eight-month period. • The 2011 calendar features 15 women's and 14 men's events within all five confederations plus one special 24-team single-gender women’s test event held August 9-14 at London’s Horse Guard’s Parade, the venue for the 2012 London Olympic Games. The 2011 FIVB Swatch World Tour is offering $7.64-million in prize money • Twelve of the tournaments will be combined men's and women's events, including the World Championships and all six Grand Slam stops. Women's-only stops will be in China (Sanya), Poland (Myslowice), and Thailand (Phuket). Men's only stops will be in the Czech Republic (Prague) and Morocco (Agadir) • New stops on this year's calendar are the double gender event in Canada (Québec) and the first event in Morocco (Agadir) (men), after a five year absence from Africa. • The 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Championships were played in Rome, Italy from June 13 through June 19. This is the first time that Italy has hosted the World Championships. • The tour returned to Beijing, the scene of the 2008 Olympic Games after two year's absence, with a double gender Grand Slam, the first ever held in Asia. In addition, the $3.6-million FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour Grand Slam series will return to Norway (Stavanger), Switzerland (Gstaad), Russia (Moscow), Poland (Stare Jablonki), and Austria (Klagenfurt). • Stavanger, Gstaad, and Klagenfurt have each staged eleven or more FIVB-sanctioned Beach Volleyball events. Each site has also hosted the FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Championships (Klagenfurt in 2001, Gstaad in 2007 and Stavanger in 2009). • Brazil has staged a FIVB Swatch World Tour event every year since the start of the International circuit for men in 1987 and women in 1992. • China is staging three and Poland will present two FIVB Swatch World Tour stops in 2011. • The men's calendar concludes with the new event in Morocco in early October while the women's tour finishes in Thailand the following month. • The International Beach Volleyball calendar also features two other age-limit World Championships.
