Moscow, Russia, July 12, 2011 – Only one game was played on Tuesday in the men’s 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch Moscow Grand Slam as Germany’s Sebastian Dollinger and Stefan Windscheif won the country quota match against their fellow countrymen Markus Böckermann and Mischa Urbatzka in three sets (21-15 10-21 17-15) in 45 minutes.

Moscow is hosting a FIVB Swatch World Tour Grand Slam for the fourth consecutive year in the heart of the historical centre of the Russian capital.

On Tuesday all Russian flags on the venue at the entrance of the hot and sunny Poklonnaya Gora (Victory Park) were lowered half way, out of respect for the victims of a cruise ship accident on the nearby Volga river this weekend.

It took Dollinger and Windscheif, who surprisingly finished fifth last year in Moscow, three match points to seal their spot in the qualification tournament. They now lead the head-to-head results by 2-1 against Böckermann/Urbatzka. Both teams share the same coach and often practice together. “Our level is similar,” Dollinger said. “It depends on the day and who has the most luck. Today we won and they will have to take the flight home.”

Dollinger and Windscheif complete the 32 teams that will compete in the qualification tournament on Wednesday for the remaining eight spots in the main draw pool play. The round robin for the eight pools with each four teams will start on Thursday. The first three of each pool will advance to the knockout rounds, pool winners earn a bye in the first round. The semi-finals and medal matches are to be played on Sunday. The women’s tournament is one day ahead with the semi’s and medal matches being played on Saturday.

The Moscow double gender Grand Slam is the fourth of six Grand Slam tournaments on the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour calendar. Moscow started out with a men’s only tournament in 1998 and 1999. In 2008 the FIVB Swatch World Tour returned to the Russian capital, after three years in St. Petersburg (2005-2007). The tournament was upgraded to a double gender Grand Slam and has been ever since.

In 2010 China’s Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu defeated Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers from the USA in the final. Germany’s Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann won the bronze medal.

The Moscow Grand Slam is the 265th men’s event on the FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour (open, grand slam, Olympic and Goodwill). The first men’s FIVB Swatch World Tour event was played February 17-22, 1987 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the first women’s event was played August 14-16, 1992 at Almeria, Spain.

After Moscow the FIVB Swatch World Tour will continue on a different continent with the double gender $380,000 Canada Open in Quebec (July 19-24).
