Shanghai, China, May 6, 2011 - Reigning Olympic champions Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers claimed their fourth straight win in Shanghai on Friday to lead two American teams into the men’s semifinals of the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour Shanghai Jinshan Open.

The other berths in the men’s Top Four were split by Germany and Spain after the conclusion of the third day of competition in the double elimination Main Draw tournament.

Top seeded Dalhausser/Rogers, who won nine gold medals on last year's FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour as well as the season-opening Brasilia Open two weeks ago, held off Nicholas Lucena/Matthew Fuerbringe 21-15, 19-21 and 15-9 in an All-American match on Friday morning to improve to a 10-0 record in the 2011 season.

“It’s a tough match, I am glad that we won it at the end,” said Dalhausser. “We’ll see who we’ll play in the semis, hopefully we could win that match and make it to the final.”

Dalhausser added that it will be hard to match or surpass the record of winning nine titles last season, but he and Rogers will strive to win the FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Championships next month in Rome. “We had an amazing season last year, I don’t know if we can top it but we could hope for the best, maybe win a few here and there, maybe the World Championships as well.”

Eleventh seeded Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal of the United States also improved to a 4-0 record at the Shanghai Open and made it to the semifinals after beating Spain’s seventh seeds Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira Collado 21-18, 18-21 and 15-9 in the other winners’ bracket match on Friday.

“It’s a great win to us, it’s very meaningful, we are very happy,” said Gibb after securing a World Tour top four place with Rosenthal for the first time since the Myslowice Open in May 2009. “We just want to win our next match, that’s a big match for us to get into the final. We have not been to a final for a couple of years, so we are excited.”

“It’s been a big weekend for USA. It’s fun to have all the other Americans playing very well and we are pushing each other,” he added.

Herrera/Gavira rebounded to beat Chinese duo Wu Penggen/Xu Linyin in a lower bracket match on Friday to set up a semifinal clash with Rogers/Dalhausser.

The other ticket for the men’s Top Four went to Germany’s third seeds Julius Brink/Jonas Reckermann, who eliminated Lucena/Fuerbringe 29-27 and 21-14 in the last round play in the lower bracket.

The men’s semifinals of the US$380,000 Shanghai Open are scheduled for Saturday morning with the medal matches to follow in the afternoon. The gold medal teams will split US$30,000, the silver US$21,000 and the bronze US$15,000.

This tournament is the second of 12 double-gender events on the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour, which also includes three single-gender events for women, two single-gender events for men and a special 24-team Olympic test event in London August 9 to 14.
