PRESS RELEASE
Hat-trick for Juliana/Larissa in Shanghai?

Juliana Felisberta Silva (standing) and Larissa França will be looking to make it three wins out of three when the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour rolls into Shanghai on Monday

Shanghai, China, May 2, 2011 – Following the withdrawal of defending two-time Olympic champions Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor of the United States, Brazil’s Juliana Felisberta Silva/Larissa Franca will be favorites in the women’s competition ahead of the double gender $380,000 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour Shanghai Jinshan Open which runs from May 2 to 8.

The Brazilians started their 2011 season with back-to-back title winning performances in Brasilia and Sanya. Will they complete a hat-trick in Shanghai?

Juliana/Larissa have captured five of the last six season’s championships on the international tour, but their only success at the Shanghai Open was in 2005 when the Brazilians made a clean sweep of the medals.

The biggest challenge for Juliana/Larissa may come from the 2006 Shanghai Open champions Xue Chen/Zhang Xi of China, who lost to Juliana/Larissa in the hard fought gold medal match of the Sanya Open 19-21, 22-20 and 17-15 this past weekend.

“Despite the loss in the final, we are happy about our improvement,” Xue Chen said. “It’s the beginning of the new season and we are in better shape than last week. Hopefully we will be even better next week in Shanghai.”

“We are looking forward to playing them again in Shanghai, because it’s a great way to improve by competing against strong teams like Juliana/Larissa. We will see what we can do and our focus is on the preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games,” she added.

Other title contenders include the 2009 Shanghai Open winners Maria Antonelli/Talita Antunes of Brazil, who finished third at the Sanya Open, and defending event champions Jennifer Kessy-Boss and April Ross of the United States.

The Chinese city of Shanghai is welcoming the FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour for the eighth year in a row. The Shanghai Jinshan Open is the second double gender event of the 2011 season with the men's country-quota play-offs kicking off on Monday, followed by Tuesday's women's country-quota action.
