Lausanne, Switzerland, April 24, 2011 - Two time world champion Adriana was unreserved with her praise for both women's pairs in the Brasilia Open final, which was won by Brazil's Larissa and Juliana against Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh.
Juliana/Larissa beat May-Treanor/Walsh 21-16, 15-21 and 15-12 to win their third consecutive title at the Brasília Open. The Brazilian top-seeds have won five of the last six season championships on the international tour while their American rivals May-Treanor/Walsh, seeded seventh in this event, have reunited for the first time since they won the 2008 Beijing Olympics for their second Olympic gold medal after recovering from juniry and having two children respectively.
"All I can say is wow! What a start to the season. Larissa and Juliana pulled off an amazing win in the women’s final against Kerri and Misty," Adrian said in her FIVB blog. "It was three sets of intense beach volleyball in what was an amazing atmosphere. Hats off to both teams for what was an outstanding performance in the opening event of the year. Of course, Juliana and Larissa had the Brazilian Tour to help them warm up for this event and because of that I picked them to win the title, but Kerri and Misty were incredible. To come back as a team after so long away and immediately jump into fourth gear is a testament to the character and believe of both individuals. They’re not two-time Olympic champions for nothing.
Adriana also had a good word for new American pairing Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Hanson: "A quick shout out to Lauren and Brooke who performed so well to finish fourth, their best result since coming together in 2010 and also to the Italians Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti whose pre-season training in Rio obviously paid dividends and their 13th place finish bodes well for the FIVB Swatch World Championships coming up in June in Rome."
