PRESENTATION

Sanya welcome Women’s FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour Stop

After hosting the penultimate women’s stop on the 2010 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour, Sanya moves to the beginning of the calendar in 2011, welcoming players from April 26-May 1. Renowned for its tropical climate, the women's event is the first single-gender stage on the tour and will be held at the Sanya Bay Resort. The first of five tournaments set to take place in China this year, the tour will also feature two double-gender events in the country, firstly in Shanghai for the eighth year in a rowfrom May 2-8 and then in Beijing for the first time since the 2008 Olympic Games from June 6-12. The 2010 Sanya women’s event was highlighted by home duo Chen Xue and Xi Zhang's victory, the first win for China at the event since 2007 as they beat Germans Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig to the silver medal, failing to drop a set throughout the competition. Xue and Zhang had to go through Brazil sisters Maria Clara and Carol Salgado to reach the final and were dominant througout the tournament. 2009's silver medallists April Ross and Jen Kessy secured bronze, beating Brazil's Maria-Clara and Carol in the third-place final. Kessy and Ross had captured the inaugural Sanya women's crown in 2008 by defeating 16-year old Ying Huang and Chinese Olympic bronze medal winner Xi Zhang in the gold medal match. Pictured to the left below are 2010 Sanya gold medal winners Xue (left) and Zhang of China.
