Gstaad Hosts First 2009 SWATCH Grand Slam Event |
|
The SWATCH FIVB World Tour returns to Switzerland for the 10-straight season as the village of Gstaad hosts men and women in the first post-world championship event on the 2009 international Beach Volleyball calendar. Gstaad was the site of the 2007 SWATCH FIVB World Championships along with hosting the first event following the conclusion of the qualifying process for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Brazilian pairs captured the 2008 gold medals as the teams of Harley Marques/Pedro Salgado and Shelda Bede/Ana Paula Connelly won their first-ever SWATCH Grand Slam events. The Gstaad stop on the SWATCH FIVB World tour started with women’s competition in 2000 followed by the first double gender event the next year. The 2007 stop featured the $1-million SWATCH-FIVB World Championships where the American teams of Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh and Phil Dalhausser/Todd Rogers captured the women’s and men’s gold medals, respectively. The men’s 2007 podium marked the first-time that a Brazilian team did not win a medal as reigning Olympic champions Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos dropped “final four” matches to Dalhausser/Rogers and Andrew Schacht/Joshua Slack, who became the first men’s team from Australia to medal in the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships. Swiss men’s teams have medaled twice, including a title in 2004 by Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel. Simone Kuhn and Lea Schwer placed fifth at the 2008 stop for the highest finish by a Swiss women’s team in Gstaad. Previously, Kuhn posted the best placements with four ninth-place finishes, including two each with Nicole Schnyder-Benoit (2002 and 2003) and Lea Schwer (2005 and 2006). Pictured below are Brazilian gold medal winners at the 2008 SWATCH stop in Gstaad (left to right), Salgado, Harley, Ana Paula and Shelda. |
