Japanese bow out as USA teams dominate
Rhodes, Greece, May 22, 2004 - A dream semi-final place just eluded Japanese pair Ryoko Tokuno and Chiaki Kusuhara at the 2004 Swatch - FIVB World Tour Hellas Open in Rhodes in Saturday when the duo went down by 2-0 (21-18, 21-16) to Annett Davis and Jennifer Jordan of the USA.

In an illuminated centre court, the Japanese, who have been playing together since 1998 waved goodbye to the crowds of Beach Volleyball fans who gathered to watch the match. But for Jordan and Davis, achieving a place in the semis alongside compatriots Misty May and Kerri Walsh and Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs was a triumph worth savouring. Brazilian team Adriana Behar and Shelda complete the line-up for Sunday's play.

The Brazilians will face the number one ranked team Walsh and May while McPeak and Youngs will do battle with Jordan and Davis.

Tokuno-Kusuhara had earlier disposed of Czech team Sona Novakova and Eva Celbova and then defeated Ribeiro-Shaylin of Brazil before eventually coming unstuck against Jordan-Davis who themselves had previously gone down to Walsh and May.

Adriana Behar and Shelda's place in the final four was assured after a win over another Brazilian side Julia Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca in a game that ended 2-0 (21-16, 21-15).

With the main arena in Rhodes set to be packed for Sunday's matches, all eyes will be on Rhodes to learn who will take the 2004 Hellas Open title.
