 What
better way could there be to treat the hangover of
Athens and the Olympic Games then to take a trip to
magical Mallorca where soaking in the sun and lounging
by the sea should work wonders on the aching limbs of
Beach Volleyball’s skilled craftsmen. Yet the rest and
relaxation can only take place on this Balearic isle
after all players present give their all to gain victory
at the Spanish Open.
For the past 30 years, holiday-makers from all over
Europe have been flocking to the island of Mallorca,
keen to experience the superb Mediterranean climate, the
stunning coastline and the unique hospitality.
As one of the leading destinations in the Spanish
tourist industry, Mallorca has also welcomed the world's
leading men's Beach Volleyball players for the past three
years and this summer the largest of the Balearic
Islands will host the women's World Tour as well for the
first time since 1992.
One of the most attractive aspects of the Spanish Open
is the location of the tournament where the courts are
lined up directly adjacent to Playa de Palma beach, thus
allowing the players and capacity crowds the freedom and
the fortune to take a dip in the clear-blue
Mediterranean waters in between matches.
In 2002 Brazil’s Adrina Behar and Shelda collected their
second gold medal of the year, by defeating Americans
Kerri Walsh and Misty May in an action packed final 2-1
(21-13, 17-21, 16-14). It was the first success for the
Brazilians over the US-team for the year.
This tournament sits as the final tournament offering
Olympic qualification points for the 2004 Games so the
action is bound to be tense. This tournament is not to
be missed. |
