Brazilians Enjoy Spot Atop
SANTA PONSA, MALLORCA, July 8, 2004 - With six of the world's top-ranked women's Beach Volleyball teams missing this week's event due to injuries, rest or domestic commitments, Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca of Brazil are taking advantage of their No. 1-seeding in this week's US$360,000 Mallorca Open.

Competing in the sixth SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event this season, Felisberta Silva and Larissa won both of their matches here Thursday over teams from Spain and Italy to advance to their Friday morning match in the third-round of the winner's bracket against eighth-seeded Angela Clarke and Kylie Gerlic of Australia.

Ranked 10th on the women's international earning's list with $39,000, Felisberta Silva and Larissa are seeking to advance to their second "final four" on the 2004 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour after placing third in the season opener this past March in Fortaleza, Brazil.

The other featured match in the third-round of the winner's bracket is an All-Germany contest between seventh-seeded Stephanie Pohl and Okka Rau and second-seeded Susanne Lahme and Danja Musch. Both German teams have secured spots in the 2004 Athens Games.

The 11th-seeded Czech Republic team of Eva Celbova and Sona Novakova challenge third-seeded Dalixia Fernandez Grasset and Tamara Larrea Peraza of Cuba while Summer Lochowicz and Kerri Pottharst of Australia face fifth-seeded Andrea Ahmann and Jana Vollmer of Germany in other opening winner's bracket matches Friday.

Eight other teams remain in the double-elimination women's Mallorca Open and will play their first match Friday after the winner's bracket contests. China's 15th-seeded Tian Jia/Wang Fei meets 25th-seeded Renata Ribeiro/Shaylyn of Brazil, the 27th-seeded Yanchulova sisters (Lina and Petia) of Bulgaria challenges 19th-seeded Ethel-Julie Arjona/Virginie Kadjo of France, 14th-seeded Vasso Karadassiou/Efi Sfyri, Greece faces 21st-seeded Milagros Crespo/Imara Esteves Ribalta, Cuba, and 26th-seeded Maria Tsiartsiani/Katerina Nikolaidou of Greece plays 17th-seeded Lucilla Perrotta/Daniela Gattelli of Italy.

The women's Mallorca Open Main Draw continues Friday with 18 more matches that will determine the final four teams for Saturday's semi-finals. The semi-final winners will compete Saturday afternoon for the gold medal with the victors sharing the $27,000 first-place prize.

The fourth of five-straight mixed gender events, the Mallorca Open concluded men's qualifying Thursday with the Main Draw beginning Friday and the finals Sunday. After the Mallorca spot, the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour concludes the string of mixed gender events with the annual stop in Marseille, France (July 13-18).
