Eight Winners & Two"Lucky Losers" Earn Mazury Open Main Draw Berths
STARE JABLONKI, POLAND, July 22, 2004 - Led by two teams from the Netherlands, eight tandems scored two elimination wins each here Thursday to advance from the Qualification Tournament to the 32-team Main Draw of the inaugural US$180,000 Mazury Open, presented by the Hotel Anders.

In addition, top-seeded Fabio Magalhães and Paulo Emilio Silva of Brazil and fifth-seeded Andreas Gilbertsson and Robert Svensson of Sweden were awarded a Main Draw berths due to the "lucky loser" rule as the highest seeded teams among the losers in the final round of elimination.

After the Brazilians forfeited their final match Thursday to 16th-seeded Janis Grinbergs and Amnnis Vensbergs of Latvia, Gilbertsson and Svensson were upset 22-20 and 22-20 by 12th-seeded Pavel Karpukhin and Dmitry Karasev of Russia.

Advancing for the Netherlands were third-seeded Richard Kogel/Emiel Boersma and ninth-seeded Jochem DeGruijter/Gijs Ronnes. Kogel and Boersma defeated teams from Poland and Kazakhstan while DeGruijter and Ronnes posted wins over teams from Latvia and Portugal.

Others teams earning Main Draw berths with 2-0 match marks Thursday were second-seeded Julius Brink/Kjell Schneider of Germany, fourth-seeded Javier Luna/Raul Mesa of Spain, sixth-seeded Jason Lochhead/Kirk Pitman of New Zealand and 23rd-seeded Olesksiy Kulinich/Oleksandra Dyachenko of the Ukraine.

Kulinich and Davachenko opened play Thursday by upsetting 10th-seeded Hannes Brinkborg and Mattias Magnusson of Sweden before downing 27th-seeded Aleh Akhrem and Aliaksandra Kavalenra of Belarus, who had upset seventh-seeded Milen Stoyanov and Boris Yankov of Bulgaria earlier in the day.

With Poland staging a SWATCH-FIVB World Tour for the first-time, the host country will have three teams in the Main Draw, including the teams of Daniel Plinski/Wojciech Plinski, Zbigniew Zukowski/Damian Lisiecki and Piotr Glogowski/Krzysztof Hajbowicz.

The Mazury Open Main Draw starts with 40 matches Friday on the lakefront below the Hotel Anders. Saturday's 18 matches will determine the "final four" teams for Sunday where the winning tandem shares $27,000 for their gold medal finish in the 13th SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event this season.
