STARE JABLONKI, POLAND, July 21, 2004 - Poland's Dariusz Parkitny and Emil Siewiorek were the "big" winner here Wednesday during the opening matches of the Qualification Tournament for the inaugural US$180,000 Mazury Open, presented by the Hotel Anders.

Seeded last in the 38-team SWATCH-FIVB World Tour qualifier, Parkitny and Siewiorek scored a 21-18, 20-22 and 19-17 win over 26th-seeded Patryk Fogel and Jaroslaw Sobczynski to advance from the Poland country quota playoff to the elimination bracket.

With their 22-20 and 21-14 win over 34th-seeded Andris Krumins and Rusians Sorokins of Latvia, Parkitny and Diewiorek advanced to Thursday where they face second-seeded Julius Brink and Kjell Schneider of Germany. Like the Parkitny and Diewiorek, the Latvians also had to win a country quota match Wednesday morning.

Also winning an opening elimination matches Wednesday was 36th-seeded Ivaylo Gavrilov and Andrey Nikolov of Bulgaria, who will play top-seeded Fabio Magalhães and Paulo Emilio Silva of Brazil Thursday morning. The Brazilians placed third in a SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event two week's ago in Mallorca.

Four country quota matches started play Wednesday where three teams from host Poland and one tandem from Latvia earned berths in the elimination bracket. Also advancing from the country quota for Poland were the teams of 30th-seeded Rafal Matusiak/Michal Krymarys and 33rd-seeded Dominik Witczak/Grzegorz Klimek.

Also competing for Poland in the Qualification Tournament elimination bracket will be 25th-seeded Marcin Mierzejewski and Maciej Budny. Gaining Main Draw spots in the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour are the teams of Daniel Plinski/Wojciech Plinski, Zbigniew Zukowski/Damian Lisiecki and Piotr Glogowski/Krzysztof Hajbowicz.

Twenty-four (24) matches will complete the Mazury Open qualifier Thursday where eight teams will advance to the Main Draw that features the top two-ranked teams on the Athens Olympic qualification list - Brazilians Emanuel Rego/Ricardo Santos and Benjamin Insfran/Marcio Araujo.

Ricardo, who missed last week's event in Marseille due to a sprained right ankle, and Emanuel have won four titles this season in Brazil, Serbia Montenegro, Portugal and Norway. The Brazilians have eight "final four" placements this season with two seconds, a third and a fourth.

Benjamin and Marcio Araujo captured last week's stop in Marseille by defeating Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel of Switzerland in the gold medal match. It was the Brazilians' first title this season after winning three times last season.

The Mazury Open Main Draw starts with 40 matches Friday on the lakefront below the Hotel Anders. Saturday's 18 matches will determine the "final four" teams for Sunday where the winning tandem shares $27,000 for their gold medal finish in the 13th SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event this season.
