 For
the men and women of the Swatch – FIVB World Tour,
Stavanger has always been a favoured destination because
of the fanatical support the event has enjoyed over the
years. The Norwegian city is the oil capital of Norway
whose landscape has been described as varied,
contrasting and inspiring.
A sensational men’s final took place here last year when
rivals Brazil and Argentina clashed. Ricardo Alex Costa
Santos and Emanuel Rego (of Brazil) emerged victorious
over their more experienced counterparts Mariano
Baracetti and Martin Conde in a three set thriller
(16-21, 21-16, 15-12). The result was all the more
surprising because it came in the first full season team
Ricardo-Emanuel had competed in.
“This one is the best of my victories here in Stavanger
because it was the toughest,” a delighted Emanuel said
afterwards. “Argentina played incredibly well in the
first set and we could not get our game together at all.
But we changed our strategy in the second and again in
the third when we tried to slow it right down and that
helped us get back in the game,” the Brazilian
continued.
With the competition for places at this summer’s Olympic
Games hotting up, team Ricardo-Emanuel are in focused
and determined mood. “Obviously our aim is to make the
Olympics, which is hard because there are so many good
Brazilian teams,” Emanuel Rego stated.
The unpredictable weather in Stavanger adds to the
excitement of the event. Indeed, it is not unknown for
conditions to change dramatically during a match so the
athletes need to be well prepared for every possible
outcome when they step out onto the sand.
Fjords and mountains, sophisticated city life and a
multicultural population all help to create a special
atmosphere in Stavanger where the motto is simply to
“enjoy life!”
