Espinho, Portugal, June 2, 2004 - With the excitement generated at last year's Portugal Open, players, fans and Beach Volleyball officials were relishing a return to the setting as quickly as possible. The time has now arrived to do it all again as Espinho braces itself for some top class men¦s Beach Volleyball on the Swatch - FIVB World Tour.
A competition total of more than 50,000 spectators were recorded at the venue in 2003 and many are estimating even more this time around.
Those who witnessed the final match on centre court last year were amazed by a tremendous clash of Beach Volleyball cultures when Brazil took on Norway. The World Champions from South America, Ricardo Santos and Emanuel Rego collided with Scandinavians Jorre Kjemperud and Vegard Hoidalen in what turned out to be one of the most exciting finals ever witnessed on the Swatch - FIVB World Tour.
The Brazilians emerged victorious by 2-1 (21-23, 21-14, 20-18). "This is by far one of the most difficult victories I have ever achieved in my career," Emanuel said afterwards as he praised the Norwegians for their titanic effort in the game.
Ahead of this yearÆs tournament in Espinho, the President of the Portuguese Volleyball Federation, Mr. Vicente Araujo welcomed all who were due to take part and offered apt words in praise of the sport, "Beach Volleyball not only gathers the worldÆs best teams, but also acts as a display of emotions typical of this modern society like few sports are able to do," Mr. Araujo stated.
"The possibility of for the spectators to participate actively in the spectacle itself results in an explosion of joy, colour and movement that enhances the constant animation and fun in Praia da Baia, Espinho," the Portuguese Volleyball President added.
The Swatch - FIVB World Tour, Portugal Open in Espinho runs from June 2-6. |
