Injury fright fails to keep Emanuel down
Budva, Serbia and Montenegro, May 29, 2004 - Brazil's Emanuel survived a centre court injury scare on Saturday as he and teammate Ricardo defeated Switzerland's Paul and Martin Laciga to secure a semi-final place at the 2004, Swatch FIVB World Tour, Serbia and Montenegro Open.

Appearing in a lot of pain following a self inflicted injury, Emanuel slowly got back to his feet after some short attention from the doctor and recovered sufficiently to achieve a 2-0 (21-14, 21-15) win with playing partner Ricardo.

"Can you believe I hurt myself!" Emanuel said with a smile on his face follwing the victory. "My left ankle hit the bone of my right knee and it was a very painful moment but after a while it wasn't too bad," he said as he held an ice pack to the afflicted area. "It's not going to be a problem for the rest of the tournament," the Brazilian added.

Speaking about his team's triumph, Emanuel stated, "It was a very hard match because Martin and Paul (Laciga) always play very well every time we come up against them. This is always a tough game for us. However, what I think we did especially well today was serve, we served very well and always hit our spots."

Playing with strength and power throughout, Ricardo and Emanuel have been one of the most consistent teams playing in this Swatch - FIVB World Tour event. "Our goal for this Open is trying to gain more consistency for the Olympics" said Emanuel. "We are trying to eliminate errors and mistakes from our game and become one-hundred percent focused. Along with myself, Ricardo is playing well. He grew up a lot in this game and in this tournament in general. In this morning's match against the Brazilians (Tande and Franco - a match Ricardo and Emanuel won 2-0, 21-15, 21-19) he played amazingly and blocked superbly."

For the Laciga brothers, it was the first of two losses in the day and they exited tournament.

Elsewhere, Markus Dieckmann and Jonas Reckermann moved through to the semis with a 2-0 win against Julien "Thunder" Prosser and Mark Williams from Australia. The highly ranked Germans managed a 2-0 (21-16, 21-16) victory in a game that ran for 34 minutes.

Patrick Heuscher and Stefan "Kobi" Kobel of Switzerland emerged as 2-1 (14-21, 21-18, 15-11) winners over Brazil's Tande and Franco to book their semi-spot.

With Ricardo and Emanuel playing Heuscher-Kobel and Dieckmann-Reckermann meeting Estonians Kais and Vesick, Sunday's action is sure to provide spectacular entertainment for the Beach Volleyball fanatics in Budva .
