Women's Norwegian Open
Stavanger, Norway July 1-5 2003

Stavanger is well known as the oil capital of Norway, but every year this ancient harbour comes to a standstill when the Beach Volleyball World Tour arrives in town.

Situated on the south-west tip of Norway, Stavanger has a history that dates back more than 900 years. But it has taken a mere five years for the $150,000 Norwegian Open to establish itself as the most anticipated sporting event in Norway's summer calendar.

More than 80,000 spectators turned out for the 2002 Norwegian Open, as 400 athletes from 37 countries battled for top honours in this highly-popular event.

"The atmosphere was just awesome - I'm glad we were able to treat Norway to some first-class beach volleyball," said American Elaine Youngs, whose victory in the Stavanger docks was the first of four gold medals she won last season with her partner Holly McPeak.

Youngs-McPeak overcame the challenge of the Australian Olympic champions Pottharst-Cook to secure gold following a close-fought 21-17, 16-21, 15-11 victory in the final.

The bronze medals went to Brazilian pair Adriana Behar-Shelda, who fought back from a set down to defeat last year's top-ranked team, America's Walsh-May, 11-21, 21-18, 15-13 in the third-fourth place playoff.

The Brazilians' victory brought an end to the run of success enjoyed by Walsh and May, who had won the opening two events on last year's World Tour in Madrid and Gstaad.

After a two-week break the women's Beach Volleyball World Tour moves to the Mediterranean city of Marseille for the $300,000 French Grand Slam, the second grand slam of the season.
