Ana
Paula - Sandra Pires Triumph in Grand Slam
Berlin,
Germany, June 28, 2003 – Brazil’s Ana Paula
Connelly and Sandra Pires Tavares fought back from
match point down in the final of the Berlin Grand Slam
on Saturday before going on to claim the gold medal in
the 2003 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event with a thrilling
victory over America’s Holly McPeak and Elaine
Youngs. The Brazilians lost a close first set 20-22
but kept alive their chances by saving match point at
21-22 down in a marathon second set, which they
finally won 29-27. They secured the title, their
second from three events on the 2003 World Tour, with
a 15-13 victory in the tiebreak. It was match packed
with superb skills and drama and as the gracious Ana
Paula mentioned after claiming her share of the
US$45,000 winner's check, there was very little
between the teams.
