MAZURY 2013 MEDIA GUIDE
SMEDINS, J. & SAMOILOVS
Together since: 2013 (5)
Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs, another new team for 2013,
started in impressive fashion with a gold medal from the Corrientes
Grand Slam and silver at The Hague and Rome Grand Slams. Both
players have been on the FIVB World Tour for a number of years and
took part in the London 2012 Olympic Games. Smedins was one of
three Latvian medallists from London 2012 when he and Martins
Plavins won bronze, while Samoilovs reached the first knockout round
alongside Ruslans Sorokins. Both Smedins and Samoilovs enjoyed
success at age-group level. Smedins won bronze at the 2004 FIVB
U19 World Championships with Ingars Ivanovs in Termoli, Italy,
while Samoilovs won the FIVB U19 gold with Plavins in 2004. In
2009
Samoilovs’ development was recognised when he was voted
Rookie of the year at the end of season awards. Away from the court
Samoilovs’ nickname is Lion King and he holds a Master’s degree in
Finance.
