Rome, Italy, June 16 - The women’s competition moves into the first knockout phase with all the favourites eager to build on their impressive performances so far at the FIVB Swatch World Championships Rome 2011 powered by smart.
Number one seeds Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca are up against Swiss pair Tanja Goricanec and Muriel Graessli, whilst their fellow Brazilians and number two seeds Maria Antonelli and Talita Antunes play the Czech Republic’s Sona Novakova and Tereza Tobiasova.
The United States’ challenge is led by the defending champions Jennifer Kessy and April Ross, who are in action against their North American neighbours Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney of Canada.
Dutch pair Marleen Van Iersel and Sanne Keizer who have won two FIVB Swatch World Tour events this year, continue the pursuit of their first World Championships against compatriots Merel Mooren and Rebekka Kadjik.
In the men’s draw, the last few pool matches will be played before the draw for the men’s round of 32 later in the day.
Number one seeds Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser are returning to form after losing their first round game.
Defending champions Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann meanwhile will try to continue their impressive start to Rome 2011 against Poland’s Michael Kadziola and Jakob Szalankiewicz.
