Rome, Italy, June 14 – Two games gone and all is going to plan for defending women’s champions Jennifer Kessy and April Ross at the FIVB Swatch World Championships Rome 2011 powered by smart.
With two games on day two the pair blew away the cobwebs with wins over Austria’s Barbara Hansel and Sara Montagnoli and Czech duo Hana Klapalova and Lenka Hajeckova.
“We had two matches in one day today and we came out with pretty much one day off a 12-hour flight from Beijing,” Kessy said. “We’ve got two wins. It’s not as fast as I would have liked, but this is the World Champs and everyone is playing well, so we’re just happy to come out of the day with two wins.“
In both games Kessy and Ross appeared slightly off their game. Against the Austrian pair they had to dig deep to win the first set 29-27, while the Czech team took the opening set before the Americans fought back to win 22-24, 21-7, 15-12.
“I never want to lose the first set,” Kessy said. “We don’t take anyone lightly. We knew they would be a tough team.
“They had lost this morning, so it was do or die for them. We knew they were going to play tough. There were a lot of errors on our side and they played well so it wasn’t a great combination for us.”
