PRESS RELEASE
Reckermann starts on road to Rome

World champion Jonas Reckermann will be hoping to applaud many more fans when he and Julius Brink defend their World Championship crown in Rome from June 16-26

Lausanne, Switzerland, February 18, 2011 – Nothing lasts forever in a sporting life, but in the Eternal City in June Jonas Reckermann will hope to ensure his status as a world champion endures at least a couple of years longer.

The German beach volleyball player and his partner, Julius Brink, became the first European winners of a world title in the sport when they prevailed at the 2009 FIVB Swatch World Championships in the Norwegian port of Stavanger. To achieve that feat the pair won eight straight matches, taking the scalp of Beijing gold medallists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers in the semifinals before overcoming Brazilian top seeds Alison Cerutti and Harley Marques in the final.

It will be in Rome at the 2011 World Championships from June 16-26 that they will bid to defend that crown. To begin their preparations the duo, who finished 2010 ranked fifth in the world, started the new year on the other side of the globe, decamping 'Down Under', and it is not too difficult to understand why.

"In Germany it is too cold to train outside and playing for months on a beach court does not help, because the conditions are different than in summer tournaments," says Reckermann in an interview with the Emsdettener Volkszeitung newspaper. "We were in January for two weeks in New Zealand and then came to Australia, to one of the most beautiful beaches in Sydney," he adds. "At Manly beach we have perfect conditions and the national teams from New Zealand, France and the Netherlands have been training here."

In all Reckermann and Brink will have five different training camps before the start of a season during which the undoubted "highlight" will be the World Championship in the Italian capital. Yet for all its significance, it is not the only goal for Reckermann, who has one eye firmly on qualification for next year's London Olympics. “A good result at the World Championship would be a major step,” says the 31-year-old, who does not need reminding he is missing an Olympic medal from his collection. "Provided we stay healthy, I think we will start in London as one of the favourite teams."

Offering an insight into his routine, Reckermann talks about his twice-daily training and sponsors' commitments, albeit these are less demanding than in other sports. "I wouldn't want to have the attention that footballers get – they can hardly move freely in public." By the end of the London Games, Reckermann will be 33. He admits a coaching post holds appeal but perhaps not just yet. "I will look at it from year to year." For now the life of an international volleyball player is too good to want to stop.
