Brazil and Norway set to clash for top position in pool C at U23

Norway's Lars Fredrik Tvinde is ready to take on Brazil

Myslowice, Poland, June 12, 2014 - Brazil’s Allison Cittadin Francioni/Gustavo Albrecht Carvalhaes and Norway’s Lars Fredrik Tvinde/Hendrik Nicolai Mol both added two more wins to their unbeaten status at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U23 World Championships on Thursday.

With four wins each they will decide in the last pool match on Friday who is going to top the pool. The 10th seeded Norwegians have a slightly better track record here in Myslowice, they have not lost a set yet, while the 3rd seeded Brazilians lost one in their first match on Wednesday.

Tvinde and Mol, on the other hand, are not fulltime beach volleyball players like the Brazilians. “We started training beach volleyball like three weeks ago, so it’s really nice to play so good”, said Tvinde after their 2-0 (21-15, 21-14) win over home team Kujawiak/Popek. In the morning they had already defeated Swiss team G.Kissling/Beeler (21-11 21-17).

“We started a little bit slow against the Polish, but after the first technical time-out we played some really good volleyball. We didn’t make many mistakes and did some really good blocks and defence.”

Tvinde (21) finished 9th at the Youth World Championships in 2010, but did not play at the U23 last year. His partner did and finished 9th with Lars Retterholt.

“The tournament is great so far, the weather is good, it’s a little bit colder than yesterday, but we like playing in such conditions. And we won everything so for us it’s just amazing”, Tvinde said about his first U23.

About their clash with Brazil on Friday the defence player said: “We will do our best for sure! Hopefully we’ll give them some struggle.”

Brazilians are reigning U21 world champions
The 20-year old Allison and Guto Carvalhaes are experiencing their first U23, but won the U21 World Championships in Umag last year. Since then, they have grown literally and figuratively. Defence player Guto seems to be even faster than last year, digging seemly unreachable balls in the back of the court and Allison plays with more control, opting more for a controlled shot than a wild hit.

The Brazilians defeated Denmark’s Overgaard/Abell in the morning (21-17, 21-12) and also ended up on top in the match against Swiss team G.Kissling/Beeler (21-11, 21-13).

“We are getting better game after game”, Guto said. “We played the U21 last year, but we never played the U23, we like it. The teams are a bit better and tougher but we like to be here.”

Allison: “I know we can play better, but we are ok with the results because we won all the games. But we will play better in the next game.”

Both boys say they are not bothered by the fact that they, as U21 champions, are the team to beat. According to their coach Monica Rodrigues they are used to the pressure. “They always play with pressure, because they are not a tall team and they are perfectionists and they like to play well.” Guto: “But winning the U21 did give us confidence.”

Recently they also made their World Tour debut at the Puerto Vallarta Open in Mexico. They did not make it to main draw though: “I had a hand injury and we were a bit nervous”, said Allison. “It was our first World Tour event. And we were anxious to win; if you lose you’re out. So there was a bit of pressure but it was a good experience.”

Asked about their biggest competitors here in Myslowice, they answered: Austria, Poland and Germany. Norway was not on the list.
