Indonesia and Australia lift titles at AVC Beach Volleyball U-21 Championship

The U-21 Men's Champions celebrate

Chennai, India, May 19, 2013 – The AVC Beach Volleyball U-21 Championships came to an exciting conclusion on Sunday. Mohammad Ashiya and Rendy Licardo of Indonesia defeated Kazakh pair Vladislav Pustynnikov and Sergy Bogatu 2-1 to capture the men's gold. Australia’s Mariafe Artacho and Jessyka Ngauamo took the women’s title with a straight set win over the Japanese duo Chiyo Suzuki and Satono Ishitsubo.

Twenty-two teams from eight countries competed at the three-day event. In the men's tournament, Mohammad Ashiya and Rendy Licardo of Indonesia made the finals with a 21-12, 21-17 win over Kazakhstan 2's Viktor Pestov and Kirili Gurin in the semifinals.

Once there, they found Kazakhstan 1's Vladislav Pustynnikov and Sergy Bogatu tough to overcome. They took the first set 21-16, but the strong Kazakh duo came back to clinch an exciting second set 21-19 and level the score at 1-1. The Indonesians were ruthless in the tiebreaker, however. They won it 15-10, taking the gold medal in 47 minutes.

In the third place playoff, Australia's Tomas Hodges and Malachi Murch, who earlier lost the semifinal to Kazakhstan 1's Vladislav Pustynnikov and Sergy Bogatu (21-15, 21-14) regained form to beat Viktor Pestov and Kirili Gurin 2-0 (21-14, 21-19).

In the women's event, Australia's Mariafe Artacho and Jessyka Ngauamo won their Sunday semifinal against Indonesia’s Nanda Ragillia and Tyas Maria Dwining 2-0 (21-10, 21-14), setting up a fixture with Japanese pair Chiyo Suzuki and Satono Ishitsubo. Once there, the Australians won in straight sets (21-11, 21-12) to take the title.

The Japanese pair had earned their final spot after winning a hard-fought semifinal, where they rallied to beat Kazakh duo Bakhtygul Samlikova and Lyubov Bogatu 2-1 (15-21, 21-18, 15-13). Later on Sunday, the Kazakhs east past Nanda Ragillia and Tyas Maria Dwining of Indonesia 2-0 (21-12, 21-12) to win the bronze medal.

The top six national federations qualified to play in the 2013 FIVB U21 World Championship to be held in Umag of Croatia. They are Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Australia, India, Oman and Japan in the men's event and Australia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and India in the women's.
