Excellent start for Indonesia at the FIVB U19 World Championships

Indonesia's Rendy Licardo (right) and Mohammad Ashfiya started their U19 campaign with two straight wins

Porto, Portugal, July 11, 2013 – Asian U21 champions Rendy Licardo and Mohammad Ashfiya from Indonesia booked two straight wins at the start of their first FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships in Porto on Thursday.

Only a few teams in the men’s competition, including top teams from Austria and Russia, could match this excellent accomplishment.

In the women’s competition Russia left their mark with two teams booking straight wins. Both teams await an interesting final pool match on Friday.

Anna Gorbunova and Nadezda Makroguzova take on Czechs Barbora Pilatova and Hana Tresnakova for the pool title. Daria Myshonkova and Valeriya Shvedova will play Italy’s Gaia Concetti and Agata Zuccarelli for top position and a bye in the first round.

Straight wins for Austria’s Buchegger and Waller

Austria’s Paul Buchegger and Philipp Waller started their first FIVB U19 World Championships campaign with two straight wins on Thursday.

The high seeded team defeated Italian qualifiers Giacomo De Fabritis and Javier Facundo Martinez 23-21 21-16 and Gerson David Contreras Lacayo and Ruben Alejandro Mora Romero from Nicaragua 21-12 21-14. More

Polish U21 champions into knockout round after two comfortable wins

Poland’s Katarzyna Kociolek and Jagoda Gruszczynska booked an early ticket to the elimination rounds on Thursday after two comfortable wins on the first day of pool play of the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships in Porto.

The reigning U21 world champions defeated Norway’s Benedicte Maaseide and Cecilie Woie 2-0 (21-12 21-5) in an early morning match. In the afternoon they had another 2-0 (21-10 21-11) win over Venezuela’s Valeria de los Angeles and Celeinis Bernal in sunnier conditions. More

Lack of communication makes Jamaican girls mess up

Lack of communication messed up the first match of Jamaica’s Tionna Graham and Lisanne Roofe at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships in Porto.

The two 14-year old girls lost 2-0 (21-6 21-7) to Australia’s Phoebe Bell and Agnieszka Kudziela and were very disappointed about their first ever international match. More

Indonesia: short guys can jump
Before and after every match Rendy Licardo and Mohammad Ashfiya jump up and down like a bunch of Masai warriors. But unlike the Masai the boys from Indonesia don’t want to impress their opponents but simply want to improve their jumping abilities.

“We are just small boys from Indonesia. People in Indonesia are not very tall. We jump every day, so we can play a good game against taller boys”, 16-year old Licardo said. More

Beach volleyball pioneer Jackie Silva returns to Portugal

Jacqueline Louise Cruz Silva, better known as Jackie Silva, was one of the pioneers of Brazilian beach volleyball. A colourful and hot-blooded player who was a true ambassador for her country and beach volleyball. Now, at the age of 51, she is helping Jamaica warm up to the sport.

Silva retired in 2004 having gathered 12 gold medals on the World Tour, two World Tour titles in 1995 and 1996, the World Championship title in 1997 and a gold medal at the first Olympic beach volleyball tournament in 1996. More

The U19 World Championships continue on Friday with the last rounds of pool play. The top three of each pool earns a spot in the knockout rounds. The pool winners advance directly to the second elimination round.

For both genders the semifinals and medal matches are scheduled for Sunday. The U19 World Championships are the final of three FIVB age group events this year. In June Myslowice hosted the U23 World Championships and Umag the U21.
