Cochabamba, Bolivia, April 7, 2014 – Venezuelan duo Rolando
Hernandez and Jose Gomez and Paraguay’s Michelle Valiente and Erika Mongelos have
taken gold in the men’s and women’s
competition in the third stage of the CSV qualification process for the
Youth Olympic Games which took place in Cocahama, Bolivia from April 4 to 6.
This is the third of six stops to be played in different
countries on the South American continent, with the first two held in Asuncion,
Paraguay and Montevideo, Uruguay. The top-six teams at the end of the six stops
will qualify for the Youth Olympic Games.
Venezuela’s Hernandez/Gomez took gold beating Argentina’s Leandro Aveiro/Santiago Aulisi 2-0 (21-19, 21-13) while Michelle Valiente and Erika Mongelos outscored Carolina Pacheco and Valeria Ocampo 2-0 (21-14, 21/13).
Hernandez/Gomez won four games in the first round against Bolivia 2-0 (21-12, 21-19), Paraguay 2-0 (21-11, 21-15), Peru 2-0 (21-11, 21-08), Uruguay 2-0 (22-20, 21-19) losing only one match against Argentine 2-0 (21-14, 21-16). Uruguayans Mauricio Cairus Vieyto and Marco Cairus gave Henrnandez/Gomez a good run for their money in the semifinals but eventually emerged victorious 2-0 (21-19, 21-19). They got through to the grand final in a rematch with the Argentine to win 2-0.
The pair from Venezuela could not attend the first stage of qualification for the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing 2014, but made it to the final of the second stage where they were beaten by Brazil 2-0 (32-30, 21-9).
The fourth stage in the qualification process will be played in Vargas, Venezuela from April 25 to 27.
