Durban expects huge fan turnout for beach volleyball Open

South Africa's Olympians Freedom Chiya and Grant Goldschmidt are hoping to do their country proud on home soil when they take to the sands at the Durban Open in December

Durban, South Africa, November 20, 2013 – As final arrangements are underway for the Durban Open – the last beach volleyball event of 2013 – the promoters are preparing themselves for some high quality action on the court as well as a huge fan turnout in the city where the ‘fun never sets’.

"I am confident that our well-coordinated media blitz will create the desired awareness of the global beach volleyball event in our city,” said promoter Sunil Geness a former KZN Provincial volleyball player of note.

"To this end we are bracing ourselves for a huge turnout of fans and the general public for the entire duration of the sizzling beach volleyball event," he continued.

The Durban Open promises to be an interesting one for spectators attending the matches, with attractive give-aways planned for the event. "Be in the stands if you want to be a winner," said Geness.

The beach volleyball loving public of 'surf-city' Durban will welcome some of the sport’s best players for the Open event scheduled to take place at New Beach from December 11 to 15.

Meanwhile, South Africa's 2016 Olympic Games hopefuls, Freedom Chiya and Grant Goldschmidt head the country's contenders. Other South African men’s teams who have registered for the event include: Jerome Fredericks/Leo Williams; Leslie Naidoo/Kiefer Govender; Ivan Solomons/Casey Augoustides; Clinton Stemmet/Jamine Naidoo.

The country’s top women's seeds of Palesa Sekhonyana/Randy Williams, along with compatriots Judith Augoustides/Kirsten Pocock, Sheena Abrahams/Natasha Strijdom, Anneta Frederikens/Gadija Jappie are also scheduled to take part.

South Africa has hosted one women’s and three men’s FIVB tournaments, and the only previous event in Durban was a men’s open event on the FIVB World Tour held in 1996, with Brazil’s Rogerio Ferreira/Guilherme Marques winning the gold medal over USA’s 1996 Olympic silver medalists Mike Dodd/Mike Whitmarsh.

The men’s FIVB World Tour has played three times in Cape Town (1995, 2004, 2005) although the only double-gender event was the 2005 tournament.

The Durban Open looks set to have a number of African countries take to the courts, with Namibia and Egypt having currently registered teams for the event.
