Spotlight back on Germany for FIVB Berlin Grand Slam

Brazilian teams will no doubt be looking to add to their 17 medals in the men's competition and the seven in the women's.

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 8, 2013 – Long considered one of the top three countries in both men and women’s professional beach volleyball, Germany will again have the international spotlight on it as the US$440,000 FIVB Berlin Grand Slam is held from August 7-11. This year’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour double-gender event will mark the 14th men and eighth women’s FIVB international event in the USA, including the FIVB World Championships in Berlin in 2005 and last year’s grand slam in Berlin after a four-year absence.

This year’s FIVB World Tour Grand Slams is using a pool format. Long Beach will begin with a one-day qualification tournament to determine the final eight spots in each gender’s 32-team main draw tournaments followed by round-robin pool play where pools of four will play three matches each with a single-elimination bracket for the final 24 teams (the top three from each pool) concluding with the medal matches for both genders on Sunday, Aug. 11. The gold medal teams in each gender in the FIVB Berlin Grand Slam will each split $33,000, the silver $22,000, the bronze $16,500 and fourth place $12,900. The Berlin stop is the seventh of a FIVB-record 10 FIVB World Tour Grand Slams in 2013.

In the first 13 years of men’s FIVB International tournaments in Germany, all of which were held in Berlin, Brazil has won eight gold medals, Norway has won two and Australia, Canada and Germany have each won one gold medal. In the first seven years of FIVB International tournaments in Germany for women, all of which have also all been played in Berlin, the United States has won four gold medals and the Brazil has won three.

The winningest men’s player in FIVB history in events in Germany has been Brazil’s Emanuel Rego, who has been half of three gold-medal winning teams in Berlin with three different partners.  In 1997 Emanuel won gold with Ze Marco de Melo, in 2008 he won with Ricardo Santos and last year he earned his third German gold medal with Alison Cerutti. Missing the first part of this year’s season because of an injury to Alison, the Emanuel/Alison tandem is expected back in Berlin this summer to defend their men’s title.

The winningest women’s player in FIVB history in German events has been USA’s three-time Olympic gold medallist Misty May-Treanor, who has been part of all four U.S. gold medal teams in Germany with two different partners, including the 2005 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. May-Treanor won gold in Berlin in 2000 with Holly McPeak and in 2005, 2007 and 2008 with Kerri Walsh-Jennings. May-Treanor retired after winning her third Olympic gold medal with Walsh-Jennings last August at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

The 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour is comprised of 10 Grand Slam events and the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. Not part of the World Tour but still counting towards the FIVB World Rankings, the FIVB yearly calendar also includes eight Open events throughout the world to help open the door for development of the sport. The FIVB Long Beach Grand Slam will be sixth of the season, starting the second half of the 2013 FIVB World Tour.

Germany’s Julius Brink/Jonas Reckermann teamed to win the gold medal in the 2012 London Olympic Games. This year, Brink has been playing with Sebastian Fuchs while Reckermann was forced into retirement after last year because of a lingering injury.

Overall in the men’s medal race in Germany, Brazil leads with 17 total medals, followed by host Germany with four, Switzerland with four, Argentina, Norway and the United States, with three each, Australia and Spain with two each and Canada with one.

In the women’s overall medal race in Germany, Brazil also leads with seven, followed by the United States with six, China with four and Australia, Cuba, Italy and Japan with one each.

Berlin is the capital city of Germany and one of the 16 states of Germany. With a population of over 3.5 million people, Berlin is Germany's largest city and is the second most populous city proper and the ninth most populous urban area in the European Union. Located in north eastern Germany on the River Spree, it is the centre of the Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan Region, which has about 4.5 million residents from over 180 nations.
