Santa Fe, June 2nd 2012 – Both Argentina and Uruguay earned a victory on the first day of the CSV Women's Beach Volleyball Continental Cup final, with the series tied at 1-1.
Uruguay’s number one couple Lucía Guigou-Fabiana Gómez beat Argentinean number two couple Silvana Olivera-Georgina Klug in straight sets while Ana Gallay-Virginia Zonta (1) overcame Uruguay's Karina Cardozo-María Eugenia Nieto (2) in a two-sets win.
The two countries will meet again on Sunday with a place at the London 2012 Olympic Games on the line.
With no free seats and on a beautiful sunny day, Triferto Beach hosted the first match with Gómez-Guigou picking up the win. Experience and a great performance in reception and attack were the key to the triumph for Uruguay, who received a lot of support from the public who travelled from their country. The visitors got back on track in the middle of the first set and remained in control to clinch the game.
On the contrary, the second match saw Gallay-Zonta lead from the first set thanks to serves which saw Uruguayans Cardozo-Nieto make errors in reception. In the second set the Argentineans were energetic and aggressive in both attack and defence giving no chance to the visitors. The evidence of this superiority was showed in the score: 21-10, 21-12 for the hosts.
With the series tied, the definitive day of competition is expected to be intense with crowds expected to swell.
If the tie continues, the tournament will be defined in a Golden Set of 15 points half an hour after the last match.
