Mazatlan, Mexico, June 18, 2012 – Teams representing eight countries - each composed of two duos - are ready to battle for a berth to the London 2012 Olympic Games at the NORCECA Men’s Beach Volleyball Continental Cup Finals from June 21 to 23 in Mazatlan, Mexico.
A 2,500-seater temporary facility in the centre of Mazatlan will host the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Continental Cup
Teams from Cuba, Canada, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and hosts Mexico all went through the process of preliminary enquiries and technical meetings on Wednesday with the Control Committee appointed by NORCECA Confederation and presided over by Mexico’s Mayra Huerta, a former Olympian who took part in the beach volleyball competition at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
The teams that finish second and third will still have a last chance to make it to London at the FIVB World Cup Qualification Tournament to be held in Moscow, Russia from June 27 to July 1, where two more Olympic passes are on offer.
Hosts Mexico, represented by local stars Aldo Miramontes/Juan Virgen and brothers Ulises and Rodolfo Ontiveros will kick off the quarterfinals against El Salvador. The other contests of the round see Puerto Rico against Costa Rica, Cuba facing Guatemala and Canada taking on Nicaragua.
The double-elimination tournament will allow the losers to continue playing for the third place, and a trip to Moscow in best-of-three series.
Canada edged Cuba in a golden-set to grab top place in the Central Zone tournament last year in the Dominican Republic where Mexico defeated Puerto Rico for third place.
Costa Rica outdueled Guatemala in a sensational golden set to claim first place at the Inter Zonal Tournament at Montelimar, Nicaragua when teams from Central America played against countries from the Caribbean. Nicaragua defeated El Salvador for the third position.
