Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, December 4, 2011 – Barbados topped the Women’s Caribbean Inter Zonal Beach Volleyball Continental Cup, a qualifying event for the London 2012 Olympic Games, as the tournament concluded on Sunday at Seven Miles Beach on Grand Cayman.
The competition between teams from the Caribbean and the Eastern Caribbean zones saw Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Curacao, Jamaica and Cayman Islands claiming tickets to the next round against Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, the top five qualified countries of Central America.
Barbados’ Anthazia Mason and Shari Matthews claimed a 2-1 (21-19, 15-21, 15-12) against Ayana Dyette and Elki Phillip of Trinidad and Tobago, while the duo of Sharon Bovell and Mona Crawford edged Pauline Woodroffe and Malika Charles 2-1 (19-21, 21-12, 15-6).
In the series for third place, Curacao’s Shamira Luis and Christine Anthony overcame Jamaica’s Cherine Richards and Cheryl Daley 2-0 (21-12, 21-12) and 15-7 in a golden set. The first match was a 2-1 (17-21, 21-8, 15-13) victory for Jamaicans Nardrake Hutchinson and Cherie Thompson over sisters Kiona and Cristal Gregorius.
Home duo Cristin Alexander and Jennifer Bily gave the local crowd something to cheer about with a 17-15 golden set victory over St. Kitts and Nevis’ Brenda Allen and Shanicia Dyer, who opened the series with a 2-1 (17-21, 21-6, 15-13) victory over Stefania Gandolfi and Melissa Burrowes.
Alexander/Bily tied the score and forced the golden set with a 2-0 (21-14, 21-13) victory over Andrea Liburd and Antoinette Henry.
