Trinidad and Tobago top men’s Caribbean inter zonal

Trinidad and Tobago players celebrate their first place at the Caribbean inter zonal tournament held in Grand Cayman
Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, December 4, 2011 – Trinidad and Tobago claimed first place at the NORCECA Men’s Caribbean Inter Zonal Beach Volleyball Continental Cup after defeating the Bahamas in a hard fought series held at Seven Miles Beach of Grand Cayman on Sunday.

In the battle for third place, Jamaica beat St. Kitts and Nevis while hosts Cayman Islands edged St. Lucia for the fifth and final spot available for the next phase of the Olympic Games qualification event against Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Panama, the top five countries from the Central America zone.

The NORCECA continental champions will be granted a berth for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Trinidadians Fabien Whitfield and Simon Blake first defeated the Bahamas’ Muller Petit and Renaldo Knowles 2-0 (21-17, 21-13) and then outclassed Byron Ferguson and Princtanique Wilson 15-13 in a golden set. Ferguson/Wilson had won 2-1 (21-19, 19-21, 15-10) against Christian Francois and Sean Morrison.

In the best-of-three series for third place, Jamaica swept St. Kitts and Nevis. Wayne Scott and Mark Lewis came from behind to win 2-1 (19-21, 21-9, 15-7) against Carl Steadroy Collins and Kemory Percival while Andre McLean and Donovan Richards beat Shawn Seabrookes and St. Clair Hodge 2-0 ( 21-18, 21-11).

Hosts Cayman Islands recovered from losing the first match of the series against St. Lucia to book the last ticket to the third round of the continental competition.

Shervin Rankin and Richard Campbell defeated Julian Bissette and Dayne Williams 15-9 in a golden set after scoring a 2-0 (21-15, 21-15) win against Gillan Octave and Augustin Faulkner who had edged 2-1 (27-25, 17-21, 15-6) the local duo of Philippe Deslandes and Olney Thompson.
