Boca Chica, Dominican Republic,
April 19, 2011 – Canada and Cuba made it into the final series of the
NORCECA Men’s Central Zone Phase of the Beach Volleyball Continental Cup
on Tuesday with both countries already qualified for the Confederation
finals where they will compete for an Olympic berth.
The NORCECA Continental Beach
Volleyball Cup forms part of the FIVB's new qualification system for the
London 2012 Olympic Games which takes place next year.
Canada and Cuba defeated Puerto
Rico and Mexico respectively and the losers will now play the United
States and the Dominican Republic to complete the four countries
advancing to the final stage of the competition.
Christian Redmann and Ben Saxton
of Canada-A defeated Pablo Guzman and Fernando Morales of Puerto Rico-B
21-18, 26-24 and then capped the day off with a 27-25, 21-18 victory
over Roberto Rodriguez and Christopher Underwoord of Puerto Rico-A.
Martin Reader and Chaim Schalk of Canada-B scored a 21-19, 17-21, 15-11
victory over Rodriguez/Underwood but lost to Guzman/Morales by score of
21-16, 21-16.
Karel Piña and Javier Jimenez of Cuba-A beat Ulises and Lombardo Ontiveros of Mexico-B 21-18, 21-18 and
edged Juan Virgen and Aldo Miramontes 22-20, 28-26. Yaniel Escobar and
Yaimel Borrell of Cuba-B defeated Virgen/Miramontes 21-19, 21-12 before
losing 21-18, 18-21, 19-17 to Virgen/Miramontes to complete the
schedule.
