Uruguay now move onto the next stage of Olympic Qualification following their win over Ecuador at the weekend |
Esmeraldas, Ecuador, November 2, 2010 – Uruguay booked their place in the next round of the South American Beach Volleyball Continental Cup as they claimed a 3-1 victory over Ecuador on Esmeralda’s beach, Ecuador at the weekend.
With the win Uruguay keep their hopes alive for qualification to the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Uruguay began well on the first day as Karina Cardozo and Maria Eugenia Nieto overcame Lisette Pachay and Irene Delgado 2-0 (21-14 and 21-9) in the opening match. Because of strong winds the match started an hour later than expected, meaning the clash between Uruguay’s Lucia Gugi and Fabiana Gomez and Ketty Chila and Ariana Vilela from Ecuador had to be postponed to the following day.
Despite the break, Gugi and Gomez saw off hosts and Chila and Vilela 2-0 (25-22, 27-25) in a tight game which could have easily gone either way.
Gugi and Gomez then guaranteed the win for their country as they defeated Carolina Pachay and Irene Delgado in straight sets (21-19, 21-9) in 40 minutes.
It was up to Ecuador’s Chila and Vilela to restore some pride for the hosts and they duly delivered beating Nieto and Cardoso 2-0 (23-21, 21-19), dealing the visitors their first loss.
