China, Kazakhstan, Thailand and Australia reach semifinals of AVC Continental Cup

Thailand foiled Japan's bid for the AVC Women's Beach Volleyball Continental Cup on Friday
Fuzhou, China, June 22, 2012 – China, Kazakhstan, Thailand and Australia progressed to the next round of the AVC Women’s Beach Volleyball Continental Cup after winning their quarterfinal at Min River Park in Fuzhou, China on Friday.

China made its presence known by beating the admirable Vanuatu team. The latter’s recent performance in various competitions has been highly praised but the Chinese squads proved too much for them.

Vanuatu’s Miller Elwin and Henriette Latika challenged China and forced a tiebreaker on their third encounter but China extinguished any hopes they had.

Vietnam’s opening match was promising but Kazakhstan recouped from a setback. Tatyana Mashkova and Irina Tsimbalova displayed great composure in returning the momentum back to Kazakhstan’s side.

Mashkova/Tsimbalova recorded resounding victories against Vietnam’s Thi Thu Ha Phan and Do Hong Loan Huynh 2-0 (21-18, 21-19), and Hong Phan Thi Cam and Thi Thiep Nguyen 2-0 (21-13, 21-13).

Thailand showed poise in eliminating the Japanese teams with a 3-1 win. Varapatsorn Radarong and Tanarattha Udomchavee continued their winning streak that began at the 3rd Asian Beach in Haiyang where claimed gold.

Japan’s Satoko Urata and Takemi Nashibori were only able to win one match in straight sets (21-13, 21-15).

Australia ended well through Sydney Olympics gold medallist Natalie Cook and her partner Tamsin Hinchley. Cook/Hinchley brought Australia back into the game after a Chinese Taipei blowout in the first match. Kou Nai Han and Chang Hui Min astounded Mariafe Artacho and Taliqua Clancy 2-0 (21-19, 23-21).

The Australians cruised into the semifinals however as Cook/Hinchley secured a second match victory.

In the semifinals, China will clash Kazakhstan while Thailand will face Australia.
