Kazakhstan withstand difficult New Zealand challenge

The Kazakhs celebrate after they edged New Zealand on Thursday
Fuzhou, China, June 21, 2012 – Kazakhstan and Thailand both sealed wins at the AVC Beach Volleyball Continental Cup Finals at Min River Park in Fuzhou, China on Thursday.

Kazakhstan outlasted an arduous challenge from New Zealand. The 3-1 victory was a difficult task, as they had very little room to close all three tiebreaker sets. Enduring the intensity of New Zealand was an exhausting responsibility for Kazakhstan but the hard grafting earned them a place in the quarterfinals.

As Dyachenko/Sidorenko were routed by Ben O’Dea/Sam O’Dea in their encounter, the Yakovlev/Kuleshov tandem proved to be the winning Kazakh pair that drew the last straw for the O’Deas.

Thailand ruled over Bahrain in all its matches and exhibited good recovery from every setback. Sangkhachot/Sukto had little difficulty defeating the Bahraini pair Ali/Mohammed but had a bumpy confrontation with Hassan/Aqueel during the first and second sets. Bahrain eventually yielded to the Thai surge and ended its campaign for Olympic qualification.

Kazakhstan will face another tough opponent on Friday as they take on top seeds Australia. Oman will challenge Indonesia, Iran will clash with Japan, while China will play its first match in the competition against Thailand.
