Excitement looms at Fuzhou for Asian beach volleyball Olympic qualification

Kazakhstan escaped Indonesia's tough challenge in the golden set at the AVC Beach Volleyball Continental Cup on opening day
Fuzhou, China, June 20, 2012 – The capital city of the Fujian province host men and women finalists of the AVC Beach Volleyball Continental Cup on Wednesday to vie for a seat at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The history-making final is a culmination of the series of competitions held in each continent that provided an opportunity to all federations to compete at the highest level in an open system that books a ticket to the Olympic Games.

The crowd were in full force to witness the action at the men’s event between Oman v Sri Lanka, Samoa v Indonesia, Iran v Vietnam, and Qatar v Japan. In the women’s event, intense match-ups emerged between Vietnam v New Zealand, and Indonesia v Kazakhstan.

Oman, Indonesia, Iran and Japan conquered their respective opponents in the men’s event while the Vietnamese and Kazakh women prevailed on the first day of competition. Indonesia held its grip to force Kazakhstan to play the golden set but the Indonesians finally succumbed to the strong Kazakh drive at 15-11.

A tougher second day of the Round of 16 for men will happen on Friday, June 21, as New Zealand will go head-to-head with Kazakhstan while Bahrain will face Thailand.

The strong women’s contingent of Vanuatu will test Hong Kong while India will challenge Japan, and Sri Lanka will go up against Chinese Taipei.

China and Australia are privileged as top and second seeds to wait for their opponents in the quarterfinals.
