Samoa, Fiji start well on first day of Continental Cup action in New Zealand

Vanuatu and Samoa fight at the net on the opening day of the tournament in Mt Maunganui
Mt Maunganui, New Zealand, February 16, 2012 – Samoa and Fiji claimed victory on the opening day of the AVC Beach Volleyball Continental Cup Oceania zonal men’s tournament in Mt Maunganui, New Zealand on Thursday while the Samoan women needed a golden set to defeat their Fijian counterparts.

The Samoa men’s team saw of Vanuatu 4-0 with an outstanding performance from top pair Aisake Raratabu and Waisale Suka.

Meanwhile, Fiji scored a 3-1 victory over Papua New Guinea with the latter only managing a consolation win in the last match.

In the women’s competition, Samoa edged Fiji after a golden set kept the crowd on the edge of their seat. Samoa’s top duo Vaituutuu Taua and Leute Mataipule downed Fiji’s Alitiana Dokonivalu and Alitia Yaya 2-1 (21-8, 18-21, 15-12) to draw level after Fiji’s top pair Marica Togayali and Mereoni Lewesi defeated Samoa’s Gasolo Sanele Pio and Samalaulu Faavaega in straight sets 21-8, 21-19. Taua and Mataipule then claimed a three set victory over Marica Togayali and Mereoni Lewesi 21-12, 13-21, 15-8, taking the overall score to 2-1, but Dokonivalu and Yaya forced the match into a golden set after a straight sets (21-6, 21-11) win over Sanele Pio and Faavaega. Taua and Mataipule finally sealed victory over Fiji’s Dokonivalu and Yaya in the deciding golden set 15-9.
