Oman, Qatar, Bahrain win openers at AVC Western Zonal Continental Cup

Oman, Qatar and Bahrain clinched victory on the first day of the AVC Western Zonal tournament of the Continental cup in United Arab Emirates
Ajman, UAE, November 19, 2011 - Oman, Qatar and Bahrain started off on a winning note on the opening day of the AVC Continental Beach Volleyball Western Zonal Tournament at the Ajman Beach in United Arab Emirates on Sunday.

While defending Gulf champions Oman coasted to a 4-0 aggregate win against Iraq , Qatar set aside Kuwait by the same score. Bahrain also toyed with hosts the UAE before winning 4-0.

The zonal competition has attracted 12 men’s teams from six countries from the AVC Western Zone with nations playing each other to become the top three teams that will represent the zone at the Continental Beach Volleyball Cup finals in New Zealand in 2012.

As many as 41 Asian and Oceania nations and regions from five AVC Zones, including two non-IOC members (Macau and Northern Mariana Islands) have registered to participate in the 2010-12 Continental Beach Volleyball Cup. As per the schedule, the top three countries from each zonal competition will advance to the continental championship to be played in New Zealand from February 16-19, 2012. Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam have already qualified as the Southeastern zonal winners.

Earlier in the morning, the Qatari teams got off to winning starts with Qatar 1 represented by Asif Sultan and Tareq Abdul Habib getting the better of the Kuwait 1 pair of Abdulaziz Dashti and Abdul Rahman Al Asaaf 21-15, 21-10.

The Qatar 2 team of Mahmoud Azzam and Abdulaziz Khallouf then defeated the Kuwait 2 pairing of Sultan Abdul Majeed and Ahmad Al Shayej 21-15, 21-15 to make it 2-0 in their favour.

The two Qatari teams then completed a well-earned result later in the evening with Qatar 1 beating Kuwait 2 and Qatar 2 defeating Kuwait 1.

“Our main opponents will be Oman and Bahrain ,” Qatar’s Tareq Abdul Habib said. “No opponent can be taken lightly, but as per recent form I think Bahrain and Oman are among the strong contenders that we will have to be wary of.”
