Indonesia on top Continental Cup SEA zonal tournament

Indonesia dives to retrieve a spike from Thailand in their match on Thursday
Phetchaburi, Thailand, October 27, 2011 – Indonesia pulled off an upset in the men’s competition of the AVC Continental Cup zonal beach volleyball tournament Southeast Asia (SEA) as they beat hosts Thailand 3-1 to top the event at Cha-am Beach on Thursday.

Vietnam also clinched a 3-1 victory over Malaysia to join Indonesia and Thailand in next year’s AVC Beach Volleyball Continental Cup finals.

Ahead of their remaining two encounters on Thursday, Indonesia led hosts Thailand 2-0 in the men’s final clash and needed only one match to seal victory.

A daunting task awaited Thailand 1’s Kittipat Yungtin and Teerapat Pollueang as they went up against Indonesia 1’s Muhammad Bastomi and Andy Ardiyansah, gold medallists at the 2009 South East Asian Games in Vientiane, Laos.

The Thai pairing started dismally with several unforced spiking mistakes to go down 18-21 in the first set. However, they got their act together to come up with a greater form to win the second set 21-16 for a 1-1 tie.

The decider saw the Thai duo in form, and they lead commandingly 4-1. The Indonesians gathered their courage, attempting to counter-attack. However, the host side foiled any efforts as Kittipat and Teerapat clinched a close third set 15-13 and the match. The victory helped Thailand narrow the gap 1-2 against Indonesia.

Thailand 2’s Sittichai Sangkhachot and Prathip Sukto then challenged Indonesia 2’s Dian Putra Santoso and Ade Candra Rahmawan looking to beat the visitors to take the match-up to a 15-point golden set.

But their luck ran out as Dian and Candra clinched a 21-18, 23-21 win as Indonesia ended 3-1.

Vietnam fought back from a first game loss to dismiss Malaysia 3-1 to finish third place and seal a place at the AVC Beach Volleyball Continental Cup final.
