Ukraine’s Valentyna Davidova: the Olympics are like magic

Team Ukraine secured a spot in the quarterfinals: Inna and Iryna Makhno, the coach, Ievgeniia Schchypkova and Valentyna Davidova

Sochi, Russia, July 8, 2016 - Ukraine’s Valentyna Davidova and Ievgeniia Schchypkova are running on their last fumes, but together with team mates Inna and Iryna Makhno they managed to claim a spot in the quarterfinals of the FIVB World Continental Cup in Sochi by winning their last pool match against Colombia on Friday.

In a direct match for third place in B, the Makhno-twins defeated Colombian sisters Andrea and Claudia Galindo 2-0 (25-23, 21-16), while Davidova and Schchypkova booked a 2-0 (21-10, 21-12) win over Diana Rios and Yuli Ayala.

The Ukrainian women missed out on qualifying through the CEV Continental Cup by losing in the final to the Netherlands, and are happy that they grabbed another chance here in Sochi.

Playing a lot of matches in the past weeks played its toll though, said Davidova. “We played non-stop for the last two months. I hurt myself yesterday when diving and pulled a muscle, but we will keep going. We have a saying in Ukraine: There is still life in the old dog yet.”

“We have had this opportunity to qualify for Rio for the past three weeks now and tension is rising”, Schchypkova added. “It’s really hard, but we try to play our own game and focus on that.”

The duo has been playing together since October 2015 with 17th place at the Antalya Open their best finish. The Makhno-twins never made it past qualification in the FIVB. If they make the Olympics the federation will decide who goes to Rio.

“If we make it we will be the first Ukrainian beach volleyball team to qualify for the Olympics”, said Davidova. “But I can’t imagine it yet. The Olympics are like magic.”

Vanuatu, Russia and Czech Republic
Vanuatu finished second in pool B, after losing the pool win decider against Austria. In pool A host country Russia finished second on a better point ratio over the Czech Republic. China won the pool undefeated.

Saturday’s quarterfinal match-ups are:
16.30 Slukova/Hermannova (CZE) – Joe/Toko (VAN)
17.20 Kolocova/Kvapilova (CZE) – Matauatu/Pata (VAN)
17.05 Birlova/Makroguzova (RUS) – Makhno/Makhno (UKR)
18.05 Ukolova/Barsuk (RUS) – Davidova/Schchypkova (UKR)
