Sochi, Russia, July 8, 2016 – Mexico took an important step on Friday towards the knockout rounds of the FIVB World Continental Cup Olympic Qualifier. The Mexicans booked their first win in Sochi by defeating Uruguay 2-1 in pool play. With one more pool match to go on Saturday the Mexicans are as good as certain of a spot in the top three, which is a guarantee for the next round.

Mexican youngsters Jose Rubio and Josue Gaxiola, silver medallists at the U21 World Championships this year, defeated Marco Cairus and Marcello Perez 2-1 (20-22, 21-15, 15-11) in the first match. Uruguay came back with a 2-0 (21-15, 21-19) win of Renzo Cairus and Sebastian Vieyto over Juan Revuelta and Ricardo Galindo.

In the golden set, which was mostly a big battle of the blockers, Rubio and Gaxiola proved to be the strongest winning 17-15, but it could have gone either way. Mexico was leading towards the end, until Uruguay came back to 13-13. Not able to close several match points blocker Rubio got a bit nervous and wild, but Gaxiola stayed calm and told his partner to “man up”, he said after the game.

“This was a very important match for us since we want to go to the next round”, he continued. “So it was important to stay positive in this match. I think the key in winning was serving hard and finishing with the block. And I only thought about winning.”

Mexico already has one men’s team in the Rio Olympics, Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros. They are the second team to represent Mexico at the Olympic beach volleyball tournament since Juan Ibarra and Joel Sotelo placed ninth in 2000.

Rubio (19) and Gaxiola (18) look up to their older counterparts and since two years they are training together under the same coach, Salvador 'Chava' Gonzalez. “They are our big example and we are happy we can train with them”, Gaxiola said.

The final pool matches in the men’s competition are scheduled for Saturday morning. The pool winner advances directly to the semifinals on Sunday. The numbers two and three in the pool play their counterparts in the other pool in cross quarterfinals Saturday afternoon.

The number four in pool B goes home. The winners of the semifinals can book a flight to Rio de Janeiro. Belgium is currently leading pool B undefeated, with China and Mexico trailing with one win and one loss each. In the final pool matches Saturday morning Belgium meets Uruguay and China is up against Mexico.
