Chile qualify for Olympics; Venezuela and Uruguay head for Sochi


The Grimalts cousins celebrate victory in Golden Set against Venezuela in Santiago

Santiago, Chile, June 26, 2016 - Hosts Chile won the South American Men's Beach Volleyball Continental Cup Final in Santiago on Sunday to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Second-placed Uruguay and third-placed Venezuela earned places at the FIVB World Continental Cup Olympic Qualification tournament in Sochi, Russia from July 6 to 10, where the participants will get a final chance to qualify for this year's Summer Games.

In the last match of the day, Esteban and Marco Grimalt of Chile took on Venezuelan pair Tigrito Gomez/Peter Hernandez in a contest for the all-important Olympic berth. An exciting match ended 2-0 (27-25, 21-19) for the local team forcing a Golden Set between Chile and Venezuela. The Chilean duo claimed victory 15-11 to win tickets for this year's Olympic beach volleyball tournament.

Matches earlier in the day included victories for Colombians Janjares-Murray against Pons-Zopie of French Guyana 2-0 (21-19, 23-21), Jorge Cabrera-Juan Paternina of Colombia defeated Koffi/Jean-Christi of French Guyana 2-0 (21-16, 21-13) and Renzo Cairus-Mauricio Vieyto of Uruguay defeated Ian Mehamed-Nicolas Capogrosso of Argentina 2-0 (21-19, 21-8). Tobar-Salinas lost to Venezuelans Tigrito-Peter. The Grimalt cousins defeated Jesus Villafañe-Jackson Henriquez of Venezuela 2-0 (24-22, 21-14).

In the afternoon, Manjarres-Murray (COL2) defeated Guyana's Koffi/Jean-Christi 2-1 (21-11, 15-21, 15-11) and Uruguay's Molina-Perez claimed victory against Argentina's Mehamed-Capogrosso 2-1 (21-14, 17-21, 15-8) and Colombia defeated Guyana 2-1 (21-13, 25-27, 15-12). Following an injury to Pablo Bianchi, Argentina had to forfeit their match against Uruguay, enabling Uruguay to progress to the Olympic Qualification tournament in Sochi.

Chile then took on Venezuela to decide the competition's final ranking. Chile's Matias Tobar-Rodrigo Salinas first lost to Villafañe- Henriquez 2-0 (21-16, 21-16). The Grimalt cousins, however, then defeated Venezuelans
Tigrito/Peter to force a Golden Set, which the local team won to qualify for the Olympics.
