Second round of CEV Continental Cup to be completed this weekend

Teams from as many as 18 countries will be involved in three tournaments scheduled this weekend for the 2nd Round of the 2014-2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup

Luxembourg, September 17, 2014 - The 2nd Round of the 2014-2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup will be completed this weekend with three tournaments which will decide which countries win the remaining slots in the 3rd Round and keep their dreams of qualifying for the beach volleyball tournament of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro alive.

After the event held in Belgrade in late August, the CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup now heads for Scotland for the first time, Denmark and Malta, the three countries which had played hosts to Sub-Zonal events for the inaugural edition of the Continental Cup back in 2010.

Denmark's athletes will be followed closely by the beach volleyball fans in Odense as they take on teams from Hungary, Iceland, Luxembourg, and Slovenia and hope to exploit home advantage to keep their Olympic campaign on track. The men’s competition in Odense will feature the same nations, but Denmark's men have already qualified for the 3rd Round after finishing second to the Czech Republic in a 1st Round tournament held in Umag, Croatia last June. Croatia, Hungary, Iceland, Luxembourg and Slovenia will compete for one of the two places in the 3rd Round next year.

A second tournament will take place at Portobello in Edinburgh, which will be the first international beach volleyball competition of this importance in the country. Scotland's heroines – including 2012 Olympian Shauna Mullin and the captain of Great Britain’s volleyball team at London 2012, Lynne Beattie – will take on teams from England, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.  Scotland's men will also have a shot at a spot in the 3rd Round, playing against the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and outsiders Slovakia.

The third 2nd Round tournament will be held on the Mediterranean island of Malta. Mellieha Bay will be the venue for Pool C, which features many newcomers on the Continental Cup stage. The men’s teams include Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, Moldova, Romania, and San Marino. Israel are favourites to qualify for one of the two 3rd Round spots on offer as pairs Sean Faiga/Ariel Hilman and Alon Sanderovich/Netanel Ohana boast international experience and have featured regularly on the European circuit this summer. In the women’s competition, Malta's representatives will take on pairs from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Latvia, Romania, and Turkey.

The 2014-2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup

The winners of the 2014-2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup will be decided in 2016. They will qualify for the beach volleyball tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

A total of 44 national federations - with 40 represented in both genders - registered to participate in the 2014-2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup, representing an impressive 80% of the CEV member countries. The inaugural edition of the Continental Cup in 2012 saw 31 national federations participate in the men's competition and 32 in the women's.

The following countries are making their debut after missing the inaugural CEV Continental Cup in the run-up to the 2012 London Olympics: Albania, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Moldova and San Marino. Great Britain participated in the 2010-2012 edition, but England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland have registered separate teams for this edition, to give their athletes an opportunity to qualify for the next Olympic Games.
