Walsh and May take their first title

Espinho, Portugal, 28 July / In perfect weather conditions, a capacity stadium, and immersed in Praia de Baja’s friendly, resort atmosphere, ecstatic Americans Walsh/May achieved their first World Series tournament win.

The final between the American team and experienced campaigners, Brazil’s Behar/Shelda, was a thrilling and tight match with constant changes in the lead. Determined not to take the match to a third set, the Americans, with Misty May playing with a medical support, dug deep, saving set point after set point before they could finally celebrate. The final result 2-0 (22-20, 24-22) in 49 minutes.

"It was fantastic winning this match,” said Kerri Walsh after the match. “I am very, very happy, because it was our first win after six months playing together with Misty. I hope this is not going to the only one,” she said.

Youngs and Fontana (USA) took third place after another exciting match against the Australians Cook/Pottharst. The Americans winning 2-1 (21/15, 11/21 and 15/13).
