 |
Athens, Greece, August 20, 2004 - SAS Prince Albert of Monaco visited the Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre here Friday prior to the opening matches in the Round of 16 for the men's and women's competition in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
An avid sportsman and four-time Olympic competitor in the Bobsled at the 1988, 1992, 1994, 1998 and 2002 Winter Games, Prince Albert was a guest of the FIVB and participated in an exhibition match on centre court where he was on the winning team twice.
Participating in the exhibition were some of the world's most renowned players, including Sinjin Smith and Bernard Rajzman, and Dutch Olympians Rebekka Kadijk and Marrit Leenstra, and FIVB Beach Coordinator Angelo Squeo
Smith ranks as the second winningest player in pro beach history (139 wins) while Rajzman was a two-time Olympian from Brazil and considered "one of the all-time greats" in the sport.
A member of the International Olympic Committee, Prince Albert was making his second visit to a Beach Volleyball site this season as he may consider staging an event in Monaco. Prince Albert also attended a SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event in France last month in Marseille.
